II. General Objectives

 

1. To develop an appreciation of the value of the institution of the Canadian home and what it stands for in the life of the country.

2. To develop a desire to build up and maintain a high standard of family life throughout the varying communities of the country.

3. To develop an understanding of the problems which face the home-maker to-day and to give information that may help in the solving of them.

4. To give a broad outlook on the vocation of home-making so that the aspects of greatest value may be visualized and placed in proper perspective with the multitude of small undertakings which are essential.

5. To develop in the student a desire to make the most of herself and to develop good judgment in the wise use of leisure.

 

Unit I. Clothing Selection.

Specific Aims:

1. To give the girls an understanding of the value of good grooming and of the part that clothing contributes to this.

2. To give information that will aid in the selection of clothing suited to the type of individual and to the occasion.

3. To give some knowledge of values so that the girls may be successfully guided in purchasing appropriate clothing on a limited income.

4. To give information regarding textiles that will be of aid in the selection and care of clothing and home furnishings.

 

Unit II. The Development of a Pleasing Personality.

Specific Aims:

1. To develop an appreciation of the advantages of a pleasing personality in home, social, and community life.

2. To develop a realization of the importance of family life and a desire to help create a happy home.

3. To develop some understanding of the management problems of the home and a willingness to share responsibility for activities carried on in the home.

4. To develop an understanding of how the location, size, arrangement, and equipment of the home affect family life.

5. To give information and to develop judgments which will enable girls to spend more wisely that part of the family income with which they are directly concerned.

6. To create a desire to acquire the desirable characteristics of a good citizen and to help in developing a more satisfactory community.

 

Unit III. Social Customs and Courtesies.

 

Unit IV. The Home and Its Management.

 

Unit V. Child Care and Development.

Specific Aims:

1. To give an understanding of the importance of heredity in the development of an individual.

2. To give an understanding of the importance of environment in the development of wholesome physical, mental, social, and emotional habits.

3. To give an appreciation of the physical, mental, social, and emotional needs of a baby and a pre-school child, and to develop the ability to care for those needs.

4. To give a knowledge of and a respect for the opportunities and responsibilities of parenthood.

 

Unit VI. Home Care of the Sick.

Specific Aims:

1. To create in the girls a desire to be intelligent home helpers in the care of the sick.

2. To teach the simple fundamentals of home nursing.

3. To develop ability and resourcefulness to act wisely under ordinary circumstances in a sick-room.

4. To develop some skill in making a bed, in preparing and serving an invalid tray, and in bathing a sick patient.

 

Unit VII. Nutrition and Meal-planning.

Specific Aims:

1. To give an appreciation of the relation of food and food habits to health.

2. To give fundamental information that will aid in the planning of meals to meet the needs of individuals and of families.

3. To give information regarding the efficient purchasing of food materials.

4. To develop in the minds of the girls a critical attitude toward newspaper and magazine articles on the subject of adequate diets.
